Thanks to new government programs introduced in the last few months the cost of installing a solar electric hot water (thermal) system in Pennsylvania is half of what it was last year. For the first time using the sun to heat your domestic hot water makes more financial sense than using traditional fuels.

The average solar thermal system costs between $7,000-$10,000 dollars. However, a new state rebate program provides a 25% refund up to $2000 dollars of the cost of the system and the federal government provides a tax credit of 30% of the cost. This means a $10,000 dollar solar hot water system now only costs less than $5,000 and the payback period is only 4-6 years.

Although average US home spends 17-25% of their energy bill on heating hot water, analysts believe that the annual total CO2 produced by residential water heaters is roughly equal to that of all cars and trucks on the road today. In other words, if everyone installed a hot water heater it would be the same as doubling the fuel-efficiency cars.

By installing solar panels the energy you generate earns an 'alternative energy credit' which can then be sold. The state of Pennsylvania requires utilities purchase an increasing number of these AECs to offset their carbon footprint. An AEC is earned for every 1000 kwh of energy you produce and these credits currently trade in Pennsylvania for $300 dollars. STEP 1: We conduct on site survey of your roof, shading profiles and your current energy bills.

STEP 2: We produce a proposal that includes site-specific drawings of your (thermal) hot water system, equipment cut sheets and a financial pro forma.

STEP 3: You accept our proposal, sign a contract and provide a deposit. We then apply on your behalf to the State for your rebate reservation.

STEP 4: We apply for all necessary permits on your behalf.

STEP 5: We install the system.

STEP 6: You pay us for the system and we submit the final paperwork to the State. It can take up to two months to receive your rebate.

STEP 7: We register your system with the State allowing you to earn alternative energy credits. (Srecs)

STEP 8: Enjoy clean, solar-powered hot water .

STEP 9: On April 15th you file for a 30% federal tax credit. If your tax bill is less than the credit the balance is carried forward year after year. It's like prepaying your taxes!
